Purely abstract works appear in Ulreich’s painting as early as the 1930s, becoming more prominent in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The earliest work reflects the influence of Wasily Kadinsky’s abstract, German Expressionist paintings. Ulreich’s work evolves throughout the remainder of his career, contributing to (or reflecting) the currents of the day; the Abstract Expressionist painters of the late 1940s, the Color Field artists of the late 1940s and early 1950s and the Mixed Media works of the 1950s.
